Let it Rain

Let it Rain

Let it Rain

I had just driven two hours to reach this destination and I watched the sun rise midway into my journey.  Anticipation mingled with some anxiety as the rain began to fall and threaten my morning of photography.  The closer I got to my objective the harder it rained.  What began as a little drizzle was gradually becoming a downpour.  As the rain launched its attack and began to hammer out its angry rhythm I began to lose hope of capturing the beauty I had anticipated.
Certain I had traveled in vain but too stubborn to abort my mission, I kept driving.  When I turn the motor off and survey the parking lot I realize that apparently I am the only person crazy enough to visit this soggy garden today.  As I sit in the silence of the screaming rain I am amazed at the accuracy of the weather man and my own pigheadedness.  But, what can I do?  Should I curse the rain?  Should I question my intelligence (don’t answer that) for daring to take a chance?  For after all, isn’t the best thing one can do when it’s raining is to simply let it rain?
With the acceptance of my circumstances came contentment and a new appreciation of my surroundings.  Sure, I would not photograph flowers in the sunshine, but I could still photograph something.  I began to recall stories of lemons and lemonade and clouds and silver linings.  With this new perspective came fresh eyes.  I stopped trying to pin blame and wonder what might have been and began to look at what was before me.  I could sit in the car and cry over the rain or I come grab an umbrella and search for some beauty.
Why do we spend so much time complaining about what we do not have and so little time enjoying what we do have?  Why curse the rain when we can grab an umbrella?  Would not all sunshine and no rain make our world a desert?  We need the rain.  We need eyes with vision enough to seek the beauty that can only be found in the rain.  Perhaps you find yourself in soggy circumstances; look around, you might be surprised how many extraordinary things are within your reach.  Stop complaining and let it rain.  Remember happiness is a choice; choose to enjoy the rain.
Something to think about:

  • Don’t pray for rain unless you are willing to put up with a little mud.
  • Prayer is asking for rain, and faith is carrying the umbrella.
  • Some people are making such thorough plans for rainy days that they aren’t enjoying today’s sunshine.
  • Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man’s growth without destroying his roots.
  • Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.
  • It ain’t no use to grumble and complain, It’s just as easy to rejoice; When God sorts out the weather and sends rain, Why, rain’s my choice.

Thankful for umbrellas and rainy days
